£77m funding package announced for north Wales hospital revamp scheme

THE Welsh Assembly Government has announced a £77m package to fund the redevelopment of Ysbyty Glan Clwyd at Bodelwyddan.

New Health Minister, Lesley Griffiths, announced the cash last week, paving the way for widespread building work to begin to upgrade the hospital to ensure it meets the latest fire and health and safety standards and to enable the centralisation of services currently spread across the estate.

The hospital has already benefited from government funding of £7.1m to remove asbestos and for fire safety measures; and a further £5.4m for new operating theatres and a urology daycare unit.

This is an exciting once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us to make great improvements to patient care at Glan Clwyd Hospital

The new plans put forward by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, which runs the hospital, will further improve safety and the location of vital services. Griffiths said: "Ysbyty Glan Clwyd has, and will continue to have, a key role in delivering health services in north Wales. Once completed, this investment will significantly improve the care for patients and the working environment for staff. We are maintaining our investment in the health service across Wales in cash terms over the next three years, despite the impact of the UK Government's cuts to the Welsh budget."

Merfyn Jones, chairman of the health board, added: "We are delighted the minister has given her approval for these developments. This is an exciting once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us to make great improvements to patient care at Glan Clwyd Hospital. This project will allow us to redevelop and improve the hospital so our staff can continue to deliver high standards in modern healthcare facilities."
