Surgical gloves protect against harmful bugs

A new range of powder-free gloves complete with AMT antimicrobial technology has been launched by Ansell Healthcare.

Providing an additional level of viral and bacterial protection for surgical staff, the Gammex range was launched in Australia in 2010 and is now available in the UK and the rest of Europe.

“Despite rigorous infection control measures, surgical teams remain exposed to the risk of contamination in cases of glove perforation,” said Marcus Heimann of Ansell Healthcare.

“Gammex Powder-Free with AMT acts like a second skin, with its own immune system to further protect surgical teams against harmful pathogens.”

A study led by Dr Heidi Misteli of the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland revealed that one in three surgical gloves were perforated during surgical procedures, exposing staff to pathogens such as HIV and Hepatitis C.
