Development to meet growing demand for intensive care services

Construction company, Beard, has been awarded a £2.2m contract to build a new two-storey extension to the Royal Surrey County Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).

The new purpose-built extension will house 12 additional bed spaces, four isolation rooms and a family and visitors area. All will be equipped with the latest life-saving technology funded by the £1.4m We Care for Intensive Care fundraising appeal launched by the hospital’s Charitable Fund in May this year.

Over the past five years the number of patient admissions into intensive care has doubled, with no increase in accommodation space. Currently, the ICU treats more than 1,000 patients annually and is now operating above its capacity. The new extension will provide the additional accommodation space and specialist medical facilities to support the needs of a growing number of critically-ill patients.

“We are delighted to be working with the Royal Surrey County Hospital to deliver this much-needed extension while ensuring the vital work of the existing ICU continues with minimum disruption,” said Mark Lansbury, contract manager at Beard.

Our project team members, including many who have personal experience of the wonderful work the ICU unit does, are particularly passionate about this project and we’re committed to applying our experience and expertise to create an excellent new building space which will enable staff to save even more precious lives in the community.”
