Next-generation digital healthcare platform provides real-time single view access to patient information

Civica has been selected by The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust to support its next phase of digital transformation with Cito, a next-generation digital healthcare platform which provides real-time single view access to critical patient information.

The new solution will improve processes, freeing up approximately 19,000 hours of trust staff time each year, and allowing the trust to focus on improving patient care.

The two organisations have a long successful partnership following the successful movement of the trust’s 19.5 million paper records online using Civica’s WinDIP solution.

Doing so dramatically improved operations for the trust’s three hospitals which are situated 25 miles apart. With over one million patients, and 19.5 million files between them, storing and sharing paper-based records was an expensive challenge. Clinicians could be left waiting up to four hours to receive a patient’s record, even once they’d been admitted.

Investing in digitisation generated impressive time and financial savings, removing the need to lease storage buildings for paper records – which cost £250,000 a year alone. Most importantly it also improved patient care. The digital records are now hosted in WinDIP which allows medical staff to access 360 million pages of patient documents at the click of a button.

Due to the programme’s success, Mid Yorkshire has now decided to invest in Civica’s new Cito solution, which builds on Civica’s WinDIP capability to further improve the speed of accessing patient information via a single sign-on and integrated interface. On average, Cito will shave 30 seconds in administration time off every patient interaction, meaning more time can be spent with patients while referral waiting times will be reduced. The new engagement will see Cito expand into other trust departments and store staff records for payroll, HR and pensions.

Debbie Bently, head of IT clinical systems at The Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust, said: “Digitising our patient records was just the first step in our journey to becoming an efficient and paper-light organisation. With Civica’s proven and continued support, we’re now ready to take the next step in our digital transformation.”

Paul Sanders, managing director of digital solutions for local government and health at Civica, added: “We’re delighted to continue working side by side with The Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust as it continues its digital evolution.

“The challenges we’re helping them overcome are common to many other trusts in the UK. By bringing together the right strategy, solutions, and guidance, any health and social care organisation can, like Mid Yorkshire, dramatically reduce costs, increase efficiencies, and improve patient care.”
