Derby hospitals secure Carbon Trust Standard

Published: 14-Jun-2011

Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for reducing its carbon emissions by nearly 4%. A mark of excellence, the standard is awarded to organisations for measuring, managing and reducing their carbon emissions and committing to make further reductions year on year. Only 20 hospital trusts in the UK have so far achieved the status. In total the Derby trust has cut its carbon emissions by 1,198 tonnes of CO2equivalent, the same as one year of electricity and gas for 160 homes. Paul Brooks, head of facilities management, said: " Going through the assessment process to achieve the standard helped us to not only quantify our footprint, but also benchmark our performance and identify areas for improvement. We have already cut our carbon emissions by nearly 4% and we estimate that this will save us around £180,000. We are committed to making further reductions in the future." Reducing the trust's carbon emissions has been achieved through the move to the new, more energy-efficient Royal Derby Hospital, raising awareness among staff, and through the launch of the environmental champions.
