SuperFLO, PVC-C and Friaphon create end-to-end system at Reading development

A trio of pipework solutions from Durapipe UK has been installed as part of the development of a new nursing home in Reading.

The new-build project at Alexandra Place will create 64 apartments for older people with varying needs. In addition to the living accommodation, there will also be an exercise room, hair salon, cafe, therapy suite and activity areas, creating opportunities for residents to socialise with the local community.

As part of the project, a pipework system was needed to distribute chilled water and mechanical services company, IDC Southern, commissioned Durapipe’s metric ABS system, SuperFLO.

In sizes up to 90mm, the technology transports chilled water from the main boiler to the flats. The hot water from the central boiler is piped to each of the individual flats using Durapipe’s PVC-C system. The pipework, in sizes 20mm-80mm, was specified due to its high performance properties.

Completing the contract, IDC Southern also specified Friaphon to handle the soil waste water drainage requirements for the ¬¬development in sizes up to 110mm. Minimising noise from drainage applications is key to creating a comfortable environment for residents, so a sound reducing drainage system was an important factor when considering products.

Commenting on the scheme, Tony Wright, mechanical director at IDC Southern, said: “The lightweight properties of Durapipe SuperFLO and the Durapipe PVC-C made installation much easier and quicker than other metal alternatives, saving considerable labour time and costs.

“It was also important that we created a peaceful and calming environment for residents, so using Friaphon ensured all drainage acoustics were kept to an absolute minimum while reducing labour time during installation as additional lagging is not required.”

Durapipe SuperFLO is specially designed to cater for chilled or boosted cold water applications within the building services sector and is completely limescale and corrosion resistant due its smooth inner-bore. The PVC-C system for hot and cold water is also limescale and corrosion resistant.
