Endoscopy unit opens at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary

Huddersfield Royal Infirmary's new £3.8m endoscopy unit has officially opened. Around 6,500 procedures a year will be carried out at the centre, which was a massive feat of engineering, with building supplies airlifted over the top of a tall ward block by a specially-erected crane and lowered into a courtyard below. Inside are a waiting area, four individual consulting rooms, three endoscopy rooms, a two-phase recovery area, and a seminar room for trainees, and £500,000 high-tech washing machines ensure the centre is compliant with the latest decontamination regulations. Consultant gastro-enterologist, Dr George Sobala, said: "I am extremely proud of the new unit, which has been designed around our patients and their needs." Colleague, Rob Atkinson, added: "This will help us continue to provide the highest level of care and provide the community with access to some of the most up-to-date endoscopic techniques currently available."
