Local residents of Barrow were given the chance to see plans for a new £12m primary care centre on the site of the former Alfred Barrow School.
An exhibition was recently held, giving local residents the chance to view designs for the new building, ask questions, and share their views.
The centre is being developed through Community Health Partnerships (CHP) Public Private Partnership LIFT Programme, led by eLIFT Cumbria.
A planning application for the new centre was submitted last month.
Once completed, the new space will enable a number of organisations to work together from one central base. Services will include three GP practices; a response base for the North West Ambulance Service; offices for the Cumbria Clinical
Commissioning Group (CCG); a range of community services such as community and specialist nursing, mental health, physiotherapy, podiatry, diabetes, and retinal screening; a pharmacy, occupational health services for BAE Systems; and space for third sector organisations.
The design will retain the listed building, but will also see the development of modern facilities.
The centre is expected to bring 5,000sq m of modern fit-for-purpose buildings into the community, replacing old, inefficient facilities.
Completion is expected in autumn 2017.
