New contract support trust’s vision for electronic prescribing and medicines administration

Civica has partnered with Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) to provide the new electronic prescribing and medicines administration (ePMA) solution, Civica Prescribing.

Developed with a specialist user group of nurses, pharmacists and doctors; Civica Prescribing ensures safety and efficiency for prescribing and medicine administration.

The system will support the trust’s long-term vision for electronic prescribing and medicine optimisation including specialised capabilities for mental health and substance misuse cases.

The new ePMA system will help lower risk of clinical incidence for patients by offering a crucial single clinical record, due to its interoperability with GMMH’s current patient record and case management system Paris; avoiding duplicate entries across multiple systems, alongside increasing operational efficiency and unifying health and care practice for the trust.

Civica Prescribing will initially be rolled out across the substance misuse specialist services at GMMH, one of the largest non-private substance misuse services in the UK, which includes six sites across the North West of England and works with more than 5,200 patients.

With adaptable functions for acute, mental health and community; Civica Prescribing can achieve a trust’s specific ePMA needs.

Civica and GMMH worked in close partnership to develop a bespoke ePMA product for the trust’s substance misuse specialist services; including the ability to batch print patient prescriptions and create titration plans to support long-term rehabilitation.

Medicines management and optimisation has been identified as a key enabler by the NHS as it advances the use of digital technology to improve quality and efficiency.

Via comprehensive electronic prescribing and medicines administration, GMMH will be able to build a precise overview of patient’s medical information enabling assured decisions and positive actions towards safer patient care.

“The system also supports the trust’s ongoing paperless strategy and delivers on local Sustainability and Transformation Plans (STPs).

Executive director of finance at GMMH, Ismail Hafeji, said: “We foresee multiple benefits for both our employees and patient safety as a result of introducing Civica Prescribing.

“The often-complex needs and rehabilitation plans of our patients mean it’s crucial to have a single-view of each patient’s record.

“Civica offered us not only a seamless integration with existing systems, but also a true partnership approach to develop a specific product for our needs.”

Civica executive director for health and care, David Roots, added: “We are delighted to be partnering with GMMH to advance electronic prescribing within the trust and support its vision to drive digital transformation, optimise medicine management, and provide optimum patient care.

“We have worked collaboratively with GMMH to provide a platform which can further evolve to meet the trust’s future digital needs.”
