Leading global design, architecture, engineering and planning firm supports industry awards

Global design, architecture, engineering and planning firm, HOK, will be exhibiting at the 2012 Building Better Healthcare Awards .

An international, multi-disciplinary architectural business serving clients on a global basis, HOK is one of the largest, most diverse and acclaimed architectural design firms in the world.

A worldwide organisation of 1,700 design staff in 23 offices offer the experience, expertise and design talent to create intelligent, memorable and sustainable buildings and places.

Healthcare is one of HOK’s principal markets. With health and hospital projects all over the world, including more than half a dozen currently underway or recently completed in the UK, HOK has a reputation for managing complex medical projects across all scales and budgets. The company has undertaken refurbishment and extension projects for both the public and private sectors, as well as major new-build works. Projects include:

  • Barts and The Royal London: HOK was selected as the architect by Skanska, the consortium appointed as the preferred bidder for the PFI scheme to redevelop St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospitals. HOK is providing full medical planning, architectural, interior and landscape design services for the scheme - the largest hospital redevelopment under the Government’s Private Finance Initiative to be carried out so far in the UK. The design will incorporate existing listed buildings, which lie on both sites. The project will provide comprehensive works at both hospitals, which form a critical part of the NHS Plan for East London
  • Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital: HOK worked with Bolsover Street Limited (BSL) – a joint venture between Ridgeford Properties and Manhattan Loft Corporation – on this £40m mixed-use development in Bolsover Street, London. The scheme concentrated integration of uses on a confined urban site and has a strong sense of social sustainability with the mix of healthcare facilities, social housing and the re-use of a listed building. The medical facility boasts a state-of-the-art outpatients’ unit, patient assessment centre and ambulatory care facilities. It also introduces public art work in the form of vibrant, two-storey glass fins on the south and west wings of the building. The fins display MRI scans that have been transposed to create shadowy and transparent hands. The 2000sq m medical building was officially opened by HRH Duke of York in April 2010.
  • London International Hospital: London International Hospital appointed HOK as the lead interior designer for Ravenscourt Park Hospital in London. It is a private cancer and heart hospital that accommodates outpatient facilities and single patient bedrooms, along with six state-of-the-art operating theatres and MRI suites. The hospital is a listed art deco building overlooking Ravenscourt Park. The interior design concept combines all necessities of a healthcare facility and feels like a five-star hotel. Patient bedrooms vary from royal suites, complete with family areas, to standard-size bedrooms. The feel of a luxurious hotel is consistent in all areas
  • Kaiserslautern Military Community Medical Center: HOK has begun design on a new two million square foot state-of-the-art military medical centre in Germany and has been commissioned to design, site plan, medical plan as well as take on the interior design. The scheme represents a joint interest between the US Government and the Federal Republic of Germany. The new KMCMC Hospital will serve a community of more than 36,000 active and retired military personnel, their families, and other beneficiaries in and around the KMCMC, as well as providing specialist care for those referred to the medical centre from many other facilities in the EUCOM. The project is being designed to achieve LEED Gold

This year's Building Better Healthcare Awards ceremony is being held at The Brewery in central London on 7 November, where HOK will be exhibiting alongside other key industry players.
