Healthcare Estates organisers, Step Exhibitions continue to add to the conference programme for this year’s event. The programme has the theme of ‘Transforming the Estate through Collaboration’ and will focus on maximising NHS Estates and Facilities’ budgets through efficiencies in design, build, management and maintenance.
This year’s conference focusses on three areas – Strategy, Engineering & Facilities Management and Design & Construction. Details of speakers and some of the fascinating sessions are discussed and highlighted below.
The organisers, Step Exhibitions and IHEEM have announced two new keynote speakers for Day 1.
Professor Timothy Evans
Prof Tim Evans’s presentation will address the clinical aspects of the Carter PEP which will complement the estates elements which will be covered by other speakers during the conference and the financial support that David Williams will address on day two. Professor Evans will discuss the clinical work that he is leading as part of the Carter Efficiency Programme, and the model hospital.
David Powell from Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust follows Professor Evans and will discuss this landmark hospital one year since opening, highlighting efficiencies and savings that were made possible in the design and construction of this facility.

Development Director, Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation TrustDavid joined the Alder Hey Board as Development Director in Dec 2012 and has over 30 years’ experience working in the NHS. A main part of David’s current role is Project Director for the new Alder Hey in the Park as well as executive lead for Alder Hey’s innovation programme.
David will talk about Alder Hey in the Park. A hospital built entirely in a park is something new in the treatment and care of children. It’s not just a first for the UK, there’s nothing like it anywhere in Europe. As a world leader in healthcare and research, we’ve built something amazing – a brand new Alder Hey in the Park, with a design inspired by children.
Designed through the eyes of a child
We listened carefully to children who shared their own vision for the new hospital and thousands of families took part in one of the NHS’s biggest ever public consultations. In fact, many suggestions like better access to fresh air and nature were made important parts of the plans and it was a drawing by 15-year-old Eleanor Brogan that impressed architects and inspired their final design.
A hospital of the future
Building a new hospital doesn’t happen very often, so this is an exciting project for the north west and beyond.
Alder Hey in the Park allows us to use all our research and expertise to give children and families the best possible hospital experience in Europe.
Alder Hey in the Park is inviting, warm, happy, calming and educational, essentially a home-from-home for children who need care. It has spacious wards where patients can enjoy privacy and dignity with plenty of space to accommodate parents. We have vastly improved clinic areas, education and research facilities, new operating theatres and a new Emergency Department.
- 75% of beds are single, en-suite rooms with pull-out beds for parents
- Access to play areas, natural light and striking views of the park are available wherever possible
- Children, young people and teenagers have dedicated areas to play and relax
- Next generation technology improves the way we deliver healthcare – from keeping patient records to dispensing medicines by robot
What we’ll do with the old hospital
We’ll demolish the old hospital, recycling around 95% of the material. We’ll transform the site into new parkland, handing back to the community the green space we ‘borrowed’ for the new Alder Hey.
Following the two keynotes, David and Tim will join the panel discussion, chaired by Simon Corben Capita Health Partners, Infrastructure of Capita. The Panel Discussion includes panellists Clive Nattrass, Carbon and Energy Fund; Peter Sellars, Department of Health and Julian Amey, Institute of Healthcare Estates and Engineering Management.
Prior to his role at Alder Hey, David held Development Director posts in Bristol and London overseeing new hospital programmes.

Manchester on the 4 & 5 October will once again host the UK’s largest exhibition, conference and dinner focussed on Energy & Efficiency, Hospital Engineering, Infection prevention, Building and maintenance, mental health and design and many other core areas impacting on the running of our NHS, private sector and other health sector buildings.
All the conference sessions, speaker biographies and details on how to book for the conference can be found on the web site at www.healthcare-estates.com
The organisers have also announced details of the 2017 Healthcare Estates event which will take place on the 10th & 11th October in Manchester. Steve Webb, Director of the event comments; ‘we have recently agreed a new five year deal with Manchester Central that will take us through to 2023. The current deal expired in 2018 and we were keen to extend our association with the venue and city of Manchester which has become a home from home for many of our exhibitors and visitors’.
The organisers have seen the event increase the number of attendees since moving to Manchester as well as the addition of the dinner and awards which is now a sell-out each year.
Details of a number of new initiatives including new areas and theatres will be announced at Healthcare Estates this year.
