The company behind a high-tech defibrillator which can be used outside hospital settings is one of a number of innovative firms in the running for a top industry award. HeartSine Technology, based in Belfast, has been shortlisted for the coveted Orange Innovation Award in the 10th annual National Business Awards. One of 10 to make it through to the final cut, and one of only a handful of medical companies, the firm has been singled out for its innovative approach to the design, development and manufacture of automated external defibrillators. In total, 151 products and companies have made it onto the shortlist, with the final winners to be announced at a gala dinner in London on 8 November, where George Osborne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, will be among the guests. Uel McChesney, chief executive of HeartSine Technologies, said: "As a UK company competing globally, the innovative technology within our products is what differentiates HeartSine and to have it highlighted here is a tremendous vote of confidence in our commitment to developing new technology which ultimately saves lives." Other medical companies on the shortlist include A1 Pharmaceuticals, Trimega Laboratories, Chemist Direct, and healthcare catering specialist, Apetito.
