Interfurn Medical Systems, which specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of hospital and operating theatre systems, has completed the UCV canopy at the Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle, Cheshire.
The new hybrid cath lab is part of the £8m refurbishment and upgrade programme carried out in 2016/17.
Philips Healthcare was appointed by BMI to supply the FD-20 imaging arm. Having worked with Philips on similar projects on a number of occasions, Interfurn was asked to design, manufacture, install and commission the UCV canopy.
The UCV canopy has been designed to fit between the tracks
The FR-20 imaging arm is ceiling mounted on tracks, and this set-up means that Interfurn is the only manufacturer in the UK that can fully integrate with the imaging equipment.
It was necessary to design a UCV canopy which was not only screen or skirtless, but was also completely flush with the ceiling.
A further challenge for Interfurn was the restricted ceiling space in the theatre. The Interfurn UCV is just 500mm deep, whilst still maintaining a 2900mm finished ceiling height.
The UCV canopy fits neatly between the tracks with no obstruction whatsoever, therefore other medical equipment mounted on arms can also be brought into the clean zone. When the arm is ‘parked’ there are no restrictive screens.

Recirculation is at low level through theatre external ducts and the AHU is remote.
LED lighting is integrated within the canopy providing 1000LUX at table level, and can be controlled along with the UCV through the surgeons panel.
Interfurn worked with Philips, T.Clarke, Maquet and Starkstrom to complete the project.
