State-of-the-art GP practice and pharmacy meets growing need for modern healthcare service

A new £2.5m medical centre in South Derbyshire is set to transform access to NHS care for thousands of residents in Willington and the surrounding area.

The GP–led health centre was officially unveiled this week by Dr Brian Hands.

Spanning more than 13,000sq ft, the new centre incorporates a state-of-the-art GP practice and an independent pharmacy as well as 52 parking spaces.

The centre will also be able to cope with the anticipated growth of population in the area for the next 20 years, serving more than 8,000 residents in Willington and a number of surrounding villages including Repton, Ticknall, Findern, Eggington and Milton.

The development was undertaken by healthcare property developer, Assura Group, delivered in conjunction with LSP Developments. Legal advice was provided by Browne Jacobson, one of the region’s leading law firms, to the partners of the Willington Medical Practice.

Senior Partner, Kyran Farrell, said: “We have been very grateful for the wise and patient counsel during the many months it took to finalise such a complex lease. This project had to succeed for this area to have decent primary care services in years to come and to be able to attract the best of staff.”

Mick Suggett, property lawyer at Browne Jacobson, added: “With GP practices now carrying out even more health and community health services than ever before from their premises we are seeing increasing numbers of practitioners looking to undertake major upgrades to their existing premises or move to new premises.

The previous GP practice operated from a converted residential property and the practice’s concerns were that with increasing standards required for health centre premises, and an increasing patient list for the practice, that their older premises may eventually be no longer fit for purpose. The new integrated centre was designed to be state-of-the-art and to meet the high NHS standards for modern practice premises.

“It was a complex project with a number of planning, property and development challenges faced by the team. These were all successfully resolved and we are delighted to have helped Kyran and his partners realise their long-term vision of delivering a health centre that will meet the needs of its patients for the next two decades.”
