New ICU for Pilgrim Hospital in Lincolnshire

Construction work has started on a new intensive care unit (ICU) for Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, Lincolnshire. The new larger ICU will feature four single rooms and an eight-bay ward, with new visitor areas and state-of-the-art equipment. The £4.2m facility, which is being created on the second floor of the hospital tower block in conjunction with the development of a new endoscopy unit, is expected to open next spring. Matron for medical services and A and E, Siobhan Sodiwala, said the new development would replace a much smaller unit and bring major benefits to seriously-ill patients and their relatives. "The old nine-bed unit was cramped and very much in need of redevelopment; this new unit will be so much better," she added. "It will enable us to meet same-sex accommodation requirements, to better care for patients' privacy and dignity, and also to provide much-improved relative and staff areas." The unit will use an advanced pendant system, which means all essential intensive care equipment will be suspended from the ceiling above each bed space for ease of accessibility and to ensure the space is kept clutter-free and is easy to clean.
