Taunton facility to deal with routine testing for patients across the South West

A new multi-million pound pathology facility has opened in the South West.

Southwest Pathology Services (SPS), a joint venture between Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Integrated Pathology Partnerships (iPP), has spent the last nine months establishing the new hub laboratory in Taunton.

The facility will deliver non-urgent, routine testing to a population of 500,000 people and will run alongside an existing network of labs that deliver onsite urgent testing for patients in hospitals in Yeovil and Taunton.

Jo Cubbon, chief executive of Musgrove Park Hospital, said: “This joint venture is a fantastic opportunity for NHS healthcare providers to work alongside a private sector partner in an innovative way.

“This new, state-of-the-art lab centred in Taunton will supply patients with the most up-to-date and efficient diagnostic tests available. There is also the potential to offer pathology services to other healthcare providers across the wider South West region.”

Geoff Serle, chief executive of iPP, added: “Working with the two NHS trusts will create a service that will drive value for money and deliver the latest pathology innovations available on the market.”
