NG Bailey has completed work on the creation of two state-of-the-art operating theatres at one of Scotland’s major hospitals.
The £4m facilities at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary – equipped with the latest keyhole surgery technology – were developed to generate extra capacity for the NHS to treat more patients, more quickly.
As part of its £1.9m contract, NG Bailey’s specialist engineering and IT services teams worked in partnership to design, install, test and commission all the theatres’ mechanical, electrical, ICT and public health services in a 10-month project.
Subject to Scottish Government approval, the theatres are poised to become home to one of Scotland’s first robotic surgical facilities. Considered to be the future for surgical procedures, robotic surgery is a powerful and highly-advanced system that enables precision surgery to be carried out on many more patients, speeding up recovery times.
The equipment will be particularly beneficial for patients with prostate, colorectal and gynaecological cancers as well as non-malignant conditions, but has the potential to be used in other specialties such as cardiac and paediatric surgery.

“The new theatres boast the latest developments in surgical innovation, a fact underlined by the robotic ‘first’ that is planned.
“They will also play a key part in ensuring the NHS has the extra capacity it needs to ensure patients will begin treatment within 12 weeks of it being agreed by their hospital doctors.”
The handover of the new theatres comes just a few months after a flagship £110m emergency care centre – with the capacity to treat 70,000 people a year - was opened at the same hospital by The Queen.
NG Bailey also played an instrumental role in the creation of that building - designing, installing and commissioning all of the mechanical and electrical and ICT services in a £26.5m contract for Robertson Construction Group, the main contractor for the new theatre development also.
NG Bailey broke new ground by harnessing the skills of its offsite manufacturing division to develop 200 bespoke multi-service corridor modules – the first of their kind in the UK health sector – 10 M&E risers as well as rooftop and basement plant modules.
The company is also involved in further development projects at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary as NHS Grampian invests more money into the modernisation of the Foresterhill site, which is also home to a children’s and a maternity hospital.
