System helps to reduce potential for errors in blood gas testing

Radiometer has launched a new app for iPhone, Windows and Android smartphones aimed at helping to avoid critical errors in blood gas testing.

Avoid preanalytical errors in blood gas testing assists healthcare providers in process optimisation, as well as aiding the identification and correction of errors in blood gas testing. It includes a handbook with video demonstrations of the correct procedure for performing an arterial puncture, arterial line or capillary sampling, supported by a troubleshooting guide and a skills test to enhance e-Learning.

Ana-Maria Simundic, assistant professor, clinical chemistry specialist, and president of the Croatian Society for Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine, said: “Up to 75% of all testing errors occur in the pre-analytical phase. The variation in test results can be detrimental to the patients as clinicians base the treatment strategies on these. The best way to ensure patient safety – and save time and money – is to understand the challenges of pre-analytical variables, helping to pro-actively reduce some of the evitable errors by doing blood gas testing correctly the first time.”
