Furniture manufacturer, Shackletons, has been commissioned by York-based Inclusion Housing to complete an extra care housing scheme in Sunderland specifically designed to accommodate people with Alzheimer's and dementia.
The new-build project, known as Seafarers Way, provides 38 one and two-bedroom apartments for rent for people with long-term conditions that make living in their own homes difficult, but who don't want to move into a residential care home.
Aiding independent living, Shackletons provided a full turn-key solution including design, manufacture and installation of seating, bedroom, lounge and occasional furniture.
Each self-contained apartment provides a double bedroom with shower room and a fitted kitchen with access to communal areas, which include comfortable lounge areas, a hairdressing salon, healthy living suite, restaurant/café, and participation kitchen to encourage resident activity and reminiscence.
Sarah Waters, business operations director at Inclusion Housing, said: “We were extremely keen to create a scheme that was supportive of individual needs while aiding independence in an environment that would have a home-from-home feeling. Shackletons really helped us achieve this and worked with us to make sure every last detail reflected that."

The development was constructed by Keepmoat and designed by SP&Architects.
