A leading clinician in the field of emergency care will give a keynote address as part of a best practice workshop on sustainable healthcare design hosted by Ryder Architecture and Mott MacDonald in association with NHS London Procurement Partnership.
On 30 September at London’s Building Centre, the Adding Value Through Sustainability forum will see Darren Makepeace use Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s new Emergency Care Centre (ECC) as a best practice exemplar in emergency care design which adopts LEAN design principles to respond to changing requirements in healthcare needs. The event also includes sessions from Ryder Architecture and Mott MacDonald and is aimed at healthcare estate procurement professionals.
The event includes a range of presentations and discussions and opportunities for audience engagement. It will conclude with networking, drinks and canapés.
Darren Makepeace has over 25 years’ NHS clinical and managerial experience at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. His role as clinical lead for the redesign and delivery of ECC’s urgent care pathway services, including emergency medicine (majors and minors) and acute medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics and gynaecology, led to the project being featured as a case study in Health Building Note 15-01.
He said: “The ECC model of working involved early engagement with stakeholders and a mock-up of the assessment pod treatment room allowing for clinical scenario testing which provided a solid foundation on which to build and can be seen as a model of guidance. The project team’s effective leadership of BIM technologies ensured early user engagement allowing the developing design to be more effectively shared, saving vital time and cost.”
Other speakers include Ryder’s Paul Bell and Ian Crow who, respectively, will look at the practice’s approach to sustainable healthcare design showcasing the £212m new Dumfries and Galloway District General Hospital and also the importance of new buildings in the strategic development of hospital estates.
Mott MacDonald’s technical director and principal engineer, Rose McArthur and Jamie MacKay, will focus on NHS travel plans and energy efficiency finance in the NHS, respectively, while Dr Jenny Thomas of Performance Consultancy will look at post occupancy evaluation, and Lisa Pasquale of Six Cylinder will present case studies showing how risk can be designed out of healthcare projects.
