Construction work to begin on new Institute of Translational Medicine in Birmingham

A £10.6m contract has been awarded to VINCI Construction UK to revamp part of the historical Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

A one-year building and refurbishment programme will see part of the old Queen Elizabeth Hospital transformed into an Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM).

The new ITM building will include a clinical research facility with laboratories and offices.

The educational and social spaces will include a lecture theatre, quiet study rooms, cafeteria, board-room and reception. There will also be a new entrance to the North Administration Block with a disabled access ramp – part of the hospital’s plan to provide step-free access for all.

Other project requirements are window replacements, lining the external walls, complete mechanical and engineering (M&E) installation, plus construction of plant room area. In addition, the building will be upgraded in order to achieve an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) band B.

Hilary Fanning, deputy director of delivery at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We have every confidence that VINCI Construction UK will provide us with a state-of-the-art building whose design sensitively reflects its architectural heritage and transforms that heritage into an iconic centre for translational medicine in Birmingham.”

Andrew Anderson, project manager for VINCI Construction UK, added: “By delivering this project, we will not only create a facility to attract businesses that undertake world-class research, we are also significantly improving the medical environment and facilities for patients and staff.”

The building has been designed by Glenn Howells Architects.
