Watford Hospital staff breakout area

Published: 30-May-2022

The Estates team at Watford General Hospital were looking to provide a permanent outside shelter for staff at the Vicarage Road site, and approached Fordingbridge to assist

With staff only previously provided with parasols on the raised roof terrace, the area quickly became unusable in wet weather. The requirement was to construct a permanent covering which allowed natural light, while protecting staff from rain on wet days. Using a bespoke wall mounting system, our 880sqft canopy has been erected to meet the needs of the busy hospital.

Operated by West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust and seeing over 88,000 attendances in the A&E department alone, the improvements to the breakout area have been gratefully received by staff at the hospital since completion.

With more than 55 years engineering experience, the canopy clearly demonstrates what Fordingbridge can achieve, with a dynamic approach of allowing any space to be used throughout the year. The 6.8m clear span oversails the roof terrace, allowing the full area to be used, with no columns or supports under the structure to obstruct movement. All works were carried out in a live hospital environment.

Our work in healthcare includes ambulance bays, main entrances, interlinking walkways and staff breakout areas. If you are looking to allow your space to be used throughout the year, and in all weather, contact our team today.
