Construction work has begun on the £150m Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Department of Clinical Neurosciences in Edinburgh.
Due to open in autumn 2017, the development will see services from the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Department of Clinical Neurosciences, and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service co-located in a modern and high-quality setting.
The hospital will adjoin the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh via a link building connecting both child and adult emergency departments. It will have 233 beds and 10 operating theatres. Of those beds, 154 beds will be in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, with 67 beds in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, and 12 in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.
There will also be a specially-designed family hotel with 26 bedrooms for families whose children have to spend time in hospital.
The conjoined children’s and adult emergency departments will mean that the most-appropriate services are available to teenagers who currently do not always fit well into either service.
And The Department of Clinical Neurosciences will make neurology and neurosurgery available to all age groups on a single site, meaning potentially quicker treatment is available.
The development is being delivered by Brookfield Multiplex Construction Europe, with Bouygues E&S FM UK as FM provider. It has been designed by HLM Architects.
