Construction work has begun on a new £160m cancer centre at Guy’s Hospital in London.
The flagship scheme, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners and Stantec, has been drawn up around the patient pathway and aims to create a one-stop shop for oncology in the capital.
The 14-storey building will be arranged into three areas – or care villages as they have been dubbed.
The main ‘Welcome Zone’ will form the heart of the building, with direct access to the Dimbleby Cancer Centre, rehabilitation gym and other drop-in facilities. Patients will then be able to take lifts to each of the ‘villages’, two of which will specialise in chemotherapy and radiotherapy, while the third is a one-stop area including outpatients, minor procedures and imaging.
There will also be a research zone, and each area will be entered from a ‘village square’ with mezzanine floors to enhance wayfinding and orientation. They will also each have their own identity and landscaped balcony gardens.
The centre is due to open in 2016.
