Nursing and midwifery systems provide a boost for staff

The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is in the process of deploying a new workforce management solution in its nursing and midwifery departments.

The SMART technology from Kronos will cover e-Rostering, time and attendance, management reporting, electronic staff records, and bank management.

Twenty-five wards are now live with the e-Rostering programme, including eight project leading wards that are now directly integrated with the trust’s payroll system.

When complete, the deployment will support an extensive range of nursing and midwifery services such as the specialist women’s and children’s wards, outpatients, accident and emergency, theatres and critical care.

Improvements derived from the system include increased staff engagement including out-of-hours access to the system and improved work/life balance; fair and transparent rosters for all staff; accurate, and real-time management information highlighting potential risks and cost effectiveness of rosters.

Geoff Smith, project manager for nurse staffing and electronic rostering at the trust, said: “The SMART solution has had a significant impact across implemented wards, enabling increased levels of transparency for all staff and providing real-time management information that enables improved utilisation of staffing resources within our organisation.”

Tristan Spencer, director of SMART for Kronos, added: “By optimising human and capital resources as efficiently as possible, NHS and other health organisations are able to empower staff and manage costs, yet still maintain a high standard of care for their patients.”
