MTX has completed the delivery and installation of 170 steel structural units for the new Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre at Royal Surrey County Hospital.

This £41.5m project will boost Royal Surrey’s robotic and non-robotic surgical services. It will also allow an additional 7,000 patients to access surgery annually.

The centre replaces an ageing Surgical Short Stay Unit and aims to meet rising demand while cutting elective surgery waiting times.

The factory-manufactured steel units range from six to fifteen metres long. They form the structural backbone of the new three-storey building.

The design includes a part-basement to accommodate the site’s slope and a partially enclosed roof plant area for air handling units and other essential equipment.

The centre will feature 56 patient beds alongside consulting, examination, and recovery rooms across the ground and first floors.

Facilities include a 20-bed second-phase recovery area, a 24-bed short-stay ward with 12 single rooms, and a 12-bed Post Anaesthetic Care Unit.

A key element is six new hybrid operating theatres on the first floor. These comprise two specialist orthopaedic theatres with clean air canopies, two laparoscopic theatres with specialised equipment and lighting, and two general theatres.

A new first-floor bridge corridor, supported on concrete pillars, will link the centre directly to the main hospital. It has been designed to provide clearance for larger delivery vehicles.

MTX has employed modern methods of construction (MMC) and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA). This approach enabled offsite fabrication of the steel modules while groundworks progressed onsite.

Using MMC has accelerated the programme, allowing earlier delivery of the facility designed to improve patient care and reduce waiting lists.

All floors will be poured concrete. Specially designed reinforcing pads in operating theatres meet exacting structural standards. Mechanical and electrical services, including air handling units, have been prefabricated and factory-tested. This ensures quality before final installation.

MTX Pre-Construction Director Mike Butler explained: “MTX has a proven track record in supporting NHS Trusts in the delivery of vitally needed new facilities and we are delighted to be partnering with Royal Surrey to create this exciting new Cancer and Surgical Centre.

“Our expertise and resources support our Trust partners at every step of the journey, from concept design through to completion and handover. This ensures each facility is fully compliant and a resource that will deliver a rapid return on investment for the Trust, as well as enhanced services for patients.”

Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust Deputy Chief Executive Ross Dunworth said: “We are pleased to have awarded the contract for this major development to MTX, who have extensive experience of similar construction at other NHS trusts. There is a shared sense of excitement around this development, and we are very much looking forward to opening and using the new centre.”
