University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust has lodged a planning application (ref. 20251012) with Leicester City Council seeking permission to extend the Osborne building at Leicester Royal Infirmary.
The application is currently under consideration by Leicester City Council.
The proposed development would introduce a purpose-built aseptic pharmacy within a controlled, sterile environment for preparing injectable cancer treatments.
Planning documents highlight that current facilities are inadequate, leaving the Trust unable to meet growing demands on the service and unable to support clinical trials.
The Trust’s proposal seeks to resolve current constraints on aseptic services and to expand capability to support both standard therapies and participation in clinical trials.

With the rate of cancer diagnoses rising faster than the national average, the new extension also aims to boost treatment production capacity for present needs and future growth.
“This new facility will allow for an increase in production of treatments, satisfying the demands now and as they increase in the future,” the application states.
UHL NHS Trust operates three acute hospitals: Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield Hospital, and Leicester General Hospital.
