What is happening with the ITU at St George’s University Hospital?

Published: 8-Sep-2025

The ITU has been in development since 2021, but what stage is it currently at and who is involved?

Hal Jones, Managing Director of Floyd Saski architects, has provided an update on LinkedIn about the state of the new ITU building at St George’s University Hospital.

The intensive therapy unit or ITU, was set in motion by St George’s University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which employed Floyd Saski to work on the project as designers.

Jones explained in his recent post that there is an open-plan staff bay, glazed ITU rooms, and multiple large roof lights. All part of a design for a light and comfortable patient environment.

Internal fit-out is now taking place.

“We look forward to sharing more internal shots,” Jones said.

What are they building at St George’s University Hospital?

The Tooting hospital is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country and a major centre for innovative and cutting-edge healthcare.

This new facility will nearly double the capacity for general intensive care services at the hospital.

With plans starting in 2021, the entire facility concept has been years in the making. Now in 2025, the structure is up, with Vanguard Healthcare Solutions acting as the construction partner.

The design team also included Create Consulting Engineers, Currie & Brown, CPC Project Services, AECOM, and Eta Projects. MultiCAD and BIM Solutions also provided pipework drawings.

The entire modular facility consisted of a 20-bed ITU, with room for staff accommodation and excess space for future fit-out.

Within the 20 beds are 2 sets of 4-bed bays, 5 isolation rooms with pressurised lobbies, as well as 7 single rooms, which have interconnecting doors for flexibility of patient type and staffing.

Minton Communications also revealed recently that they have been chosen for the network infrastructure alongside client Imperium Electrical Solutions.

Jones also revealed in the comments that the facility had installed some bat boxes.
