The new Sunderland Specialist Eye Hospital has reached a significant construction milestone following its successful handover by Kier Construction ahead of opening to patients later this summer.

Delivered on behalf of Sunderland City Council and South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, the facility is located within the Riverside Sunderland regeneration scheme and will replace Sunderland Eye Infirmary when it becomes fully operational.

The hospital forms a key part of the wider regeneration programme, which is regarded as one of the UK's most ambitious urban redevelopment projects and sits at the heart of Sunderland City Council's vision to create a vibrant and sustainable city centre.

Following handover, the hospital will now enter a phased transition period, allowing services to be safely transferred ahead of opening to patients later this summer.

Bringing together a wide range of specialist ophthalmology services under one roof, the facility has been designed to improve access to care while enhancing the experience of patients, staff and visitors. The building includes operating theatres, outpatient departments, diagnostic facilities and dedicated treatment areas.

Throughout the design process, Kier worked closely with clinicians, staff and patients to ensure the hospital reflects operational requirements and supports efficient patient pathways.

The resulting design aims to deliver modern, user-focused clinical environments capable of meeting growing demand for specialist eye care services across the North East.

A key feature of the development is its dedicated energy centre, helping to create a low-carbon and resilient healthcare facility aligned with the sustainability ambitions of both the trust and Sunderland City Council.

The hospital also forms part of a wider cluster of healthcare and innovation investment in the city.

The facility will sit aside the £4.2m Northern Ophthalmic Research and Innovation Institute (NORI), which is being developed to support research into the early detection and prevention of eye disease and other health conditions.

The project represents part of Kier's wider contribution to the Riverside Sunderland programme, which also includes the delivery of Culture House, a new cultural and community venue designed to provide flexible space for learning, events and public engagement.

Dan Doherty, Regional Director for Kier Construction North & Scotland, said: "By combining that collaborative approach with sustainable infrastructure, we have created a future-ready facility designed to perform for the long-term health of the community."
