Karndean Designflooring has released its latest RIBA-approved CPD for architects and specifiers looking to consider the elderly and the vulnerable when designing new spaces.
Entitled Inclusive Flooring Design: Where Form and Function Meet Legislation, the long-awaited CPD is set to inform and inspire specifiers designing flooring in environments where the visually impaired, patients with dementia, and the elderly will be present.
The curriculum will cover key topics such as reducing the risk of slipping, complying with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and importance of colour contrast and light reflectance values. Importantly, it will introduce guidelines for product selection, maintaining hygienic floors and environmental benefits.
“Whereas previously specifiers may have felt restricted in their design, architects are now looking to incorporate zoning, sweeping curves, rug effects and borders around key areas to support vulnerable users in various spaces,” explains Paul Barratt, managing director of Karndean Designflooring.
“As leaders in luxury vinyl flooring, we have a responsibility to educate within the industry and demonstrate how to utilise materials to their full potential.
“The trend for savvy and interesting spaces continues, but ultimately we want to support specifiers in creating an engaging floor design which will ensure vulnerable people will feel safe.”
The new CPD joins Karndean Designflooring’s already successful RIBA accredited CPD on Luxury Vinyl Floor Coverings.
