Work finished on landmark facility

Construction work is now complete on the new Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Newcastle.

Mansell, a Balfour Beatty company, has worked with Edward Cullinan Architects on the landmark building situated within the grounds of the Freeman Hospital.

The development includes a number of bespoke sustainable design features, designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘excellent rating’. These include thin-film photovoltaic panels which have been incorporated into a dramatic concave curved roof that shelters a mezzanine level leading to a flat landscaped roof.

The centre’s exposed concrete frame has been covered in natural landscaping embankments and weathered steel panels, integrating it into the landscaping that surrounds the building.

A partially-enclosed courtyard leads into two wings of accommodation with counselling rooms, library, a large living room and kitchen area.

Eddie Tribe managing director of Balfour Beatty’s North East delivery unit, said: “It has been a privilege to help deliver a scheme that will provide vital support for those suffering with and affected by cancer. Through attention to detail and creative design, a highly-sustainable and truly unique space has been created at Maggie’s North East.”
