Decision support system to be rolled out to population of 5.8 million

Cambio Healthcare Systems has won a Pan European tender to supply a Decision Support (DS) System for NHS Scotland through a national contract with NHS National Services Scotland.

The long-term aim is to deploy Cambio’s solution as the national decision support platform which works with clinical and care systems to improve patient safety and outcomes for the country’s population of 5.8 million.

In the first instance, the Scottish Government Primary Care Division is sponsoring implementation in early adopter general practices.

The Scottish Government Digital Health and Care Division managed the tender and selection process and is now managing the initial implementation and evaluation in early adopter sites.

The Cambio application is built around open standards and works with any electronic heath record system through straightforward integration.

It is embedded into the clinical workflow to assist and help clinicians in real-time to follow the recommended latest evidence for treatment and prevention of medical conditions.

Cambio’s DS solution is already well established in the Nordics with the tool deployed across eight Swedish healthcare regions, accounting for 30% of the population.

A study using the application applied to the single area of stroke prevention demonstrated that the DS saves save lives and avoid unnecessary individual suffering by reducing strokes caused by irregular heart rhythm. In addition to this, a reduction of direct treatment and rehabilitation costs could be estimated at £600,000 per year for a population of 450,000 or over £7m a year for a population the size of Scotland.

“We are very proud to win this contract in competition with other European CDS suppliers,” said Peter Gille, group chief executive of Cambio Healthcare Systems.

“The Scottish Government has a strong vision and are pioneers in this area; we are really looking forward to working together implementing their ideas through our CDS solution.

“For Cambio, this opportunity opens up the possibility to address a wider international audience with our EHR independent CDS solution.”

Dr Ann Wales, programme manager for decision support at the Scottish Government’s eHealth Division, said in a joint statement with Dr Paul Miller, clinical lead for the primary care decision support project and clinical lead for the Scottish Clinical Information Management Practice Network: “Scotland’s Clinical Strategy and Primary Care Transformation strategy recognise that decision support reduces unwarranted variation, waste and harm, and facilitates new models of care, including shared decision-making.

We are delighted that Scottish Government eHealth and Primary Care Divisions supported the recent tender to select a national decision support platform.

The evaluation panel chose the Cambio solution because it is highly usable and customisable, and adheres to open standards.

“This means it can interface with clinical and care systems across all sectors. It can therefore be truly transformational in supporting consistent, evidence-based care across the whole patient journey.“
