The Princess of Wales Hospital is a district general hospital within the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University local health board. Opened in 1985, the Hospital is located on the outskirts of Bridgend town in South Wales, and provides modern, purpose-built accommodation for the provision of acute health services to the local population of approximately 183,000 people.
Up until a couple of years ago, they were using bedpan washers. With rising costs associated with the washers, the infection control team attended a seminar and discovered more about the benefits of the Single Use System. Since then, they have installed 9 Panaways from Haigh throughout 9 wards.
Andrew Kidger, Estates Officer, says of the units, “After 15 years of using bedpan washers, and with rising costs associated with them we decided to make the switch from washing to disposing. The benefits have been far reaching; from an infection control issue perspective the risk of infection is reduced as the items are single use so there is no handling of unclean items. Once bedpans are used they are disposed of, and nurses have more time to spend with patients as they are not cleaning bedpans. From my point of view, energy consumption is reduced as there’s no elements or water to heat, no testing to be carried out, therefore running costs are reduced. A win-win all round.
The service supplied by Haigh has been excellent; Phillip Sidwell is always at the end of a phone to answer any questions, backed up by a knowledgeable service team. Nothing is too much of a problem. We plan to make full use of Haigh’s excellent factory training by sending our own engineers to their headquarters in order to undergo their Haigh Factory Training for Hospital Engineers.”
