Modular unit will ensure services can continue

Portakabin has provided an interim physiotherapy suite for Roodlands Hospital.

During the development of East Lothian Community Hospital, the physiotherapy team based at Roodlands need a space to continue to provide rehabilitative inpatient care.

The modular building was installed in just one day to reduce further disruption to the busy hospital site and will be in place for two years.

It includes an open-plan office, storage room, hallway, and toilets, as well as an open-plan treatment room.

In addition to providing the building, Portakabin installed hospital-grade skirting boards, a fully DDA-compliant access ramp, and a safety alarm system. And the company assisted the hospital trust in gaining planning permission and providing a building warrant for the duration of the hire.

Emma Anderson, manager at Portakabin, said: “We worked with NHS Lothian for some time to ensure they got the exact space they required.

“The physiotherapy suite at Roodlands Hospital is a great example of how quickly we can get a building up and running on time and under budget.”

Miriam Anderson, East Lothian Community Hospital programme manager at NHS Lothian, added: “It is key to ensure that all our construction programmes create as little disruption to our patient services as possible.

“The interim physiotherapy suite allowed the services to provide alternative arrangements for patients without any unnecessary delays in treatment or additional travel for the same treatment.”
