The Government has pledged the cash to finally secure the development of the long-delayed Midland Metropolitan Hospital scheme.
Following Prime Minister, Boris Johnson’s announcement of a £2.8billion NHS capital funding boost, Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust has received permission from the Treasury to close a deal with its preferred developer, Balfour Beatty, for the new hospital.
The facility will bring together acute and emergency care on one site, offering maternity, children’s and inpatient adult services to half a million people.
Construction of the hospital was put on ice in January 2018 following the collapse of developer, Carillion.
Now, the Government has pledged the £350m needed to resume work, with Balfour Beatty expected to be confirmed as the contractor taking over the troubled project.
Due to be completed in April 2022, the hospital will replace services currently provided by City Hospital in Birmingham and Sandwell Hospital.
Toby Lewis, chief executive of the trust, said: "Today’s announcement by the Treasury is hugely welcome news.
“We are working round the clock to conclude the commercial close, and the agreement of the Final Business Case and appointment of a Preferred Bidder is the last national approval hurdle overcome.”
