Bilston wins funding for £25m CDC as health campus plans expansion

Funding from NHS England and the City of Wolverhampton Council will support a new diagnostic centre serving Wolverhampton and Walsall, with construction expected to start in mid-2027, subject to council approval

A planned health and wellbeing facility in Bilston has been selected to house a £25m NHS Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), expanding proposals for a new healthcare campus serving communities across Wolverhampton and Walsall.

Construction is expected to begin in mid-2027, with completion scheduled for the end of 2028.

The funding has been secured from NHS England by the City of Wolverhampton Council, working in partnership with The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, the Black Country Integrated Care Board and Walsall Council.

The centre will provide local access to diagnostic tests and scans, complementing existing services at New Cross Hospital, Cannock Hospital and Walsall Manor Hospital.

The proposed development will be located on council-owned land next to the WV Active Bilston-Bert Williams leisure centre.

Plans for a wider health and wellbeing facility on the site were already progressing following a £20m Government grant secured through the council’s Bilston Health and Regeneration Programme.

The addition of the CDC will expand the proposals into a combined facility bringing together community diagnostics, primary care, family support and leisure services.

The project remains subject to approval by the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet.

“To secure this Community Diagnostic Centre is a huge feather in the cap for Bilston and Wolverhampton as a whole. It is testament to the hard work and investment we have put in to deliver a new health and wellbeing campus in this part of the city,” said Councillor Stephen Simkins, the Leader of the City of Wolverhampton Council.

The CDC is part of larger plans for a health campus, which will bring diagnostic and treatment services together with prevention, early intervention, family support and physical activity facilities.

The proposed campus would comprise the CDC, primary care, Council Families Services, improvements to Bert Williams Leisure Centre and associated public realm.

Its location near Bilston’s bus and tram interchange, alongside planned improvements to surrounding public spaces, is intended to make the services accessible to local communities.
