The new partnership between North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston aims to improve patient outcomes, modernise services, and enhance collaboration across the region

North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust have confirmed the formation of Bristol NHS Group.

This new healthcare partnership has been established to deliver seamless, high-quality, and sustainable care for patients. It will serve communities across Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, and the wider South West.

North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust have formally come together under a shared ambition to tackle common challenges, deepen collaboration, and improve services for the communities they serve.

The move follows the announcement in December 2023 of their intention to form a hospital group within two years

Chaired by Ingrid Barker, with Maria Kane appointed as Group Chief Executive, the newly established Bristol NHS Group aims to transform healthcare delivery through a clear focus on what it describes as the ‘Four Ps’: patients, people, populations, and the public purse.

The organisations’ vision for the future includes reducing waiting times, ensuring equitable care regardless of location or background, expanding community-based services, and harnessing digital technologies to modernise healthcare delivery.

The partnership also aims to strengthen its workforce, offering fulfilling career opportunities and fostering an environment where staff feel empowered and valued.

Central to this ambition is the Joint Clinical Strategy, published in March 2024, which sets out how clinicians from across both Trusts plan to break down organisational barriers, reduce duplication, and address health inequalities through more integrated, patient-centred services.

The formation of Bristol NHS Group marks a significant development in the region’s healthcare landscape

Ingrid Barker, Bristol NHS Group Chair, said: "The formation of Bristol NHS Group is a key milestone in our mission to transform healthcare for the communities we serve.

“Our vision is to deliver seamless, high-quality, and equitable care for everyone who needs it, not built around organisational boundaries but instead focused firmly on patients and their loved ones."

Maria Kane, Group Chief Executive, added: "Bristol NHS Group is focused on what matters most: delivering outstanding care, reducing health inequities, strengthening communities, and offering fulfilling careers for our people.

“Together, we will confront shared challenges, modernise services, and learn from each other. By aligning our strengths, sharing expertise, and removing unnecessary duplication, we’ll make sure every patient, wherever they live, and whichever hospital they visit, receives consistently excellent care."

The formation of Bristol NHS Group marks a significant development in the region’s healthcare landscape, as both Trusts look to drive innovation, improve outcomes, and deliver greater value for the public.
