Darwin Group is due to install modules for the new CDC in Hinckley this summer following the start of construction this month.
Planning permission for the CDC in Hinckley
NHS Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Integrated Care Board was granted outline planning permission for the CDC by the Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council.
Approval of the CDC planning application meant that agreements could be finalised with contractor, Darwin Group.
In addition, University Hospital of Leicester NHS Trust is preparing to commence the recruitment of staff needed to provide services in the CDC when it opens.
Darwin Group told Building Better Healthcare that it plans to hand over the CDC in early 2025.
The project will be delivered up to 60% faster and with up to 90% less waste than traditional building methods
Richard Pierce, Darwin Group CEO, told Building Better Healthcare that the company is “incredibly proud to be working alongside its NHS partners to deliver Hinkley CDC, which will help improve healthcare outcomes for the local community.”
“Thanks to our innovative offsite modular construction methods, the project will be delivered up to 60% faster and with up to 90% less waste than traditional building methods, making it one of the most efficient and sustainable options in the marketplace,” Pierce concluded.
The CDC in Hinckley
The CDC is a purpose-built facility that will provide a “one-stop shop” for a range of diagnostic checks, scans and tests closer to peoples’ homes including:
- CT
- MRI
- X-ray and ultrasound
The CDC will also provide clinical rooms for:
- Phlebotomy
- Endoscopy
- Audiology and cardio-respiratory tests
The CDC will be built on the existing site of the physiotherapy services portacabins in Hinckley and District Community Hospital.
The CDC will have a stepped design, leading back from Mount Road
The physiotherapy therapy services have been relocated to a temporary premise while the new permanent location at the Hinckley Hub on Rugby Road is refurbished.
The CDC is a £24.6m investment in health services and is one of only 40 to be awarded NHS funding in England.
The scheme forms part of the government’s ambition to roll out 160 community diagnostic centres across the country by 2025.
Further, the CDC aims to deliver 89,000 tests and appointments per year, relieving the pressures on hospitals in Leicester and Nuneaton.
The CDC also aims to support sustainability initiatives of the NHS by reducing travel.
Design of the CDC in Hinckley
The site will have two storeys and will provide:
- 1541.32 sqm of space for medical use
- 378.98 sqm of associated plant area set on the roof
- 217.13 sqm of screened external plant (plant refers to the mechanical and electrical components required to run the building, such as air source heat pumps, solar panels, and air handling units.)
- 29 car parking spaces
- 9 new cycle spaces
In order to reduce any tendency for the building to have an overbearing presence along the highway, it will have a modular design, with varying roof heights.

The CDC will also have a stepped design, leading back from Mount Road.
Helen Hendley, Director of Planned Care for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Integrated Care Board, told Building Better Healthcare that the “CDC will bring healthcare closer to home for people in Hinckley and the surrounding areas.”
“Once operational, it will provide capacity for 89,000 tests per year, including CT and MRI scans, endoscopy, X-ray and ultrasound facilities,” Hendley continued.
“We would like to thank Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, NHSPS and University Hospitals of Leicester for working with us to reach this stage of the project,” Hendley concluded.
