A major new clinical building at Birmingham Children’s Hospital has been completed and handed over by GRAHAM Construction.

Contractor GRAHAM has delivered the three-storey facility under NHS England’s ProCure23 framework, with the building set to open later this year following final commissioning.

The new facility includes additional operating theatres, recovery space and advanced clinical infrastructure designed to support more complex procedures and improve theatre throughput.

A key feature of the scheme is a state-of-the-art intraoperative MRI suite, enabling surgeons to capture real-time imaging during procedures to improve precision and reduce the likelihood of repeat operations.

“We are proud to see the building move into its next phase as it prepares to open and begin supporting patient care,” said Elizabeth Smith, Healthcare Director at GRAHAM.

The building also incorporates upgraded plant and electrical infrastructure, alongside sustainability measures including a groundwater heat plant intended to support lower-carbon energy use across the wider hospital site.

The development forms part of a wider transformation programme at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust aimed at increasing capacity, modernising surgical environments and improving patient experience across the hospital estate.

The interventional MRI suite has been funded through charitable donations to Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity.

According to GRAHAM, delivering the project required careful coordination due to the building’s location within a live hospital environment, with construction taking place adjacent to operational theatres and clinical areas.

Strict controls on noise, vibration and logistics were maintained throughout to avoid disruption to patient care.

The completion marks a key step forward in the wider redevelopment of the hospital estate, which also includes further phases of refurbishment and new facilities aimed at improving access, efficiency and long-term resilience of services.
