The innovative design of a cancer treatment centre, a new sliding door, the introduction of an electric transport fleet, and a ground-breaking new neurology unit were all singled out for praise at this year’s IHEEM Awards.

Held earlier this week on the first day of the annual IHEEM Conference and Healthcare Estates exhibition in Manchester, a total of seven awards were handed out by guest host, former Bath and England rugby player, Gareth Chilcott.

This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award went to former IHEEM president, Bill Smith.

The Axis Flo-Motion Door System won the Product Innovation Award

Commenting on the winning team, the judges said: “To manage such significant change without impacting on patients is an achievement to be very proud of. It required an enormous amount of planning and co-operation and is an exemplar of how things can be done.”

Three products caught the eye of the judging panel in the Product Innovation category, with two highly commended certificates handed to Belimo Automation UK for its Electronic Pressure Independent Value (EPIV); and Sentinel Water for its Ice Pigging biofilm removal system. The winner in this category was Axis Automatic Entrance Systems for the AXIS Flow-Motion Manual Sliding Door.

Choosing their winner, the judges said: “This product is new and very innovative. It is a classic example of British engineering with a manufacturer rising to the challenge and significantly reducing the opening force needed to operate this door.”

In the Patient Experience class, Gilling Dod Architects was highly commended for its work on the Sid Watkins Building at The Walton Centre in Liverpool. The contractor for that project, Interserve Construction, also picked up the Project of the Year title for the trailblazing scheme.

The winner of the Patient Experience class was Mersey Care NHS Trust for Clock View Hospital. This was also highly commended in the Project of the Year category.
