Life science and medical technologies singled out in 2016 Red Dot Awards

Mobile ultrasound app and floor stand for OR microscopes come out on top at international design awards

A revolutionary new mobile ultrasound machine and app, and a floor stand for OR microscopes, were among 84 innovations singled out for praise at the 2016 Red Dot Awards.

Manufacturers and designers entered a record number of 5,200 innovations in this year’s renowned product design awards.

And two earned Best of the Best titles in the Life Science and Medicine category – the FS5-33 floor stand from Haag Streit Surgical and the Lumify Ultra Mobile Ultrasound + App from Royal Philips.

Among the other 82 entries praised by the judges were the GeneReader Next-Generation Sequencer System from QIAGEN; the XPR Ultra-Microbalance from Mettler-Toledo; the Planmed Clarity Digital Breast Tomosynthesis technology from Planmed; the SA 3800 spectral cell analyser from Sony; and the ACUSON NX3 ultrasound system from Siemens Healthcare.

Entries for the awards came from 57 countries, with only 79 Best of the Best Awards handed out, and 107 Honourable Mentions. In total 1,304 products were given prizes.
