A £480,000 investment is set to transform existing space at Summerfield Primary Care Centre in Birmingham as part of the government's Neighbourhood Rebuild Programme, a major initiative to deliver 250 Neighbourhood Health Centres across England by 2035.
The project will repurpose former dental accommodation to support the delivery of community respiratory and diabetes services by Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
Summerfield PCC has been selected as one of the first 16 Community Health Partnerships (CHP) NHS LIFT buildings included in the first wave of the national Neighbourhood Rebuild Programme.
NHS LIFT (Local Improvement Finance Trust) is a public-private partnership (PPP) programme established to finance, develop and manage modern primary and community healthcare facilities across England.
CHP is working with Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, NHS Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board and BaS LIFTCo to deliver the scheme.
Funding for the scheme is part of the £200m in funding included in the autumn budget for the neighbourhood health centres, with 27 out of the 250 neighbourhood health centres expected to open by 2027.
The development is expected to provide capacity for an additional 41,000 patient appointments each year, helping to meet rising demand for local community-based healthcare.
Construction is due to begin imminently, with completion anticipated in January 2027.
“CHP’s investment in Summerfield Primary Care Centre demonstrates how we are working with partners to deliver care closer to home and make better use of the NHS LIFT estate in line with the Government’s Neighbourhood Rebuild Programme,” said James Weaver, Regional Director at Midlands at Community Health Partnerships.
“This project will cement Summerfield’s position as a neighbourhood health centre and ensure it meets the needs of patients now and in the future.”
