£57m boost for St Helier Hospital emergency care as major expansion plans move forward

St Helier Hospital has received an investment to create a larger emergency department, new urgent treatment centre and expanded same-day care facilities

St Helier Hospital is set to receive a major upgrade to its emergency care services following confirmation of up to £57m in funding from NHS London.

The investment will support plans to expand and modernise the hospital’s emergency department, helping staff respond to increasing demand and provide care in a safer, more efficient environment.

Around 250 people currently attend the department each day.

The proposed improvements include a larger Emergency Department with redesigned facilities, a new Urgent Treatment Centre to help more patients receive timely treatment, expanded Same Day Emergency Care services and upgrades to essential infrastructure.

The changes are expected to help reduce waiting times, improve patient flow and support more people to receive treatment without needing an overnight hospital stay.

The project remains subject to further approvals, with construction expected to begin in phases from spring 2027 if plans are approved.

Work will be staged to allow emergency services to continue operating throughout the programme.

The investment forms part of wider plans to improve hospital facilities across the area, including the longer-term development of a Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Sutton and upgrades to existing sites.

“This is a significant and very welcome investment in the future of St Helier. It reflects both the growing demand on our services and the incredible efforts of colleagues who continue to deliver high-quality care every day, despite the challenges of working in an ageing and often overcrowded environment,” said Dr Amir Hassan, Divisional Medical Director for Medicine and ED Consultant at ESTH.

In February, IKON Architecture also completed work to refurbish the intensive treatment unit 2 (ITU 2) at the St Helier Hospital site, following Gateway 2 approval last August.
