HOK has worked with Reddy Architecture + Urbanism to build the new 96-bed hospital in Limerick, expanding surgical, oncology and outpatient services

Bon Secours Health has opened a new 96-bed hospital in Limerick, expanding surgical, oncology and outpatient services for up to 50,000 patients annually.

Bon Secours Health System CLG is one of Ireland’s largest private hospital operators.

HOK, working with Reddy Architecture + Urbanism, led the architecture, medical planning and interior design of the state-of-the-art facility.

“The design enhances the patient experience, reduces stress, and integrates clinical efficiency with a welcoming environment,” said Allison Wagner, HOK Regional Leader for Healthcare.

The building comprises two distinct blocks connected by bridges and external courtyards, offering panoramic views and natural light.

Vertical terracotta fins shade inpatient wards from low-angle sunlight, while a sweeping entrance canopy provides sheltered access for patients and visitors.

Clear, stress-free pathways guide people from arrival and testing through to procedures and recovery, supported by hospitality-inspired interiors, rooftop gardens and healing landscapes.

The hospital will eventually see future expansion to 100 beds.

The facility is part of a mixed-use masterplan that includes a school, hotel, and offices. It occupies a prominent gateway site off the M7 Dublin motorway.

How was sustainability built into the hospital?

Bon Secours states that this is its most sustainable hospital to date.

The building offers convenient access to public transport, facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, and electric vehicle parking.

Sustainable building features include natural and LED lighting, natural ventilation of non-clinical spaces, a high-performance envelope and strategically positioned plant spaces above high-use areas to reduce service ductwork.

Sustainable materials and alternative energy sources, such as air-to-water heat pump technology, are used where possible.

Bon Secours Health System Group CEO Alan Sharp said: “This €213 million investment reflects our long-term commitment to expand access to high-quality care, supporting medical innovation and creating meaningful employment opportunities in the Mid-West.”
