Plans for a new health hub in Edinburgh took a step forward this week when planning permission for the development was agreed. A joint project between NHS Lothian and the City of Edinburgh Council, the Wester Hailes Healthy Living Centre will be built in Harvesters Way and will bring together a range of services that will promote health and wellbeing in the community. As well as providing new accommodation for the Wester Hailes Medical Practice and community health services including speech and language therapy, midwifery, paediatrics, the building will also house council services such as children and families, criminal justice and social work practice teams. In addition it will accommodate the Wester Hailes Health Agency, currently based in Dunbryden, along with space for other voluntary sector services. Charles Winstanley, chairman of NHS Lothian, said: "It's great to see this project take another step forward. This is such an exciting and innovative development which, once completed, will bring substantial health and wellbeing benefits to the local community." Work is expected to be completed in early 2013.
