Modular relocation and crane lifts signal next phase of Royal Shrewsbury Hospital transformation

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust has announced construction works from 10-12 of April to support progress on IHP’s hospital transformation

A programme of construction activity, including modular building relocation and crane lifts, will take place from 10–12 April as redevelopment of emergency care facilities progresses at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The programme includes the relocation of a modular building currently located at the front of the Emergency Department, which will be moved to the north of the site near new ward facilities.

The move will enable refurbishment and remodelling works to continue, supporting the creation of a dedicated children’s emergency care area.

In parallel, crane operations will be used to install heating and cooling infrastructure for new healthcare facilities under construction on site.

To facilitate this, a section of the hospital car park and nearby pedestrian routes will be temporarily closed from the evening of 10 April until late afternoon on 12 April.

Hospital services, including the Emergency Department, will remain open and operational throughout the works, with traffic marshals in place to guide patients and visitors safely around the site.

The activity forms part of a multi-million pound wider transformation programme from the trust, which includes the development of new clinical facilities and an expanded emergency care footprint planned for completion later in the decade.

Timeline of the overall hospital transformation

Back in 2024, Integrated Health Projects (IHP), the joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine, was selected to build a modern four-storey building at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital site and remodel the existing emergency department, which was procured via the P23 framework.

The new four-storey facility is being built near the Outpatients’ entrance and will provide new emergency care, women and children’s and critical care facilities.

In January, IHP marked the completion of the building’s main frame and the start of the next phase of construction.

The Trust has now brought the new Royal Shrewsbury Hospital building to its final structural stage, with internal fit-out and specialist systems now underway.

The facility will provide approximately 27,000 sqm of additional clinical space and is scheduled to open in 2028.
