September saw one new CDC open to patients and a major expansion formally open, while further centres progressed through planning, expansion and procurement.

The following is a roundup of key CDC milestones from September 2026.

CDCs that have opened

Walton CDC: Actiform delivered the second phase of Walton Hospital’s Community Diagnostic Centre, which officially opened on 22 September following a £7.5m investment.

The expansion extends the existing CDC with permanent MRI and CT facilities, replacing mobile scanners, as well as DEXA scanning and children’s audiology. It brings total investment in the centre to £12.7m.

Five modular units were manufactured off site and installed while the hospital remained operational.

Braintree CDC: McLaughlin & Harvey completed the new CDC at Braintree Community Hospital, which opened to patients on 14 September.

The trust took handover of the building in August before completing the final fit-out and installation of specialist equipment.

The centre will provide around 75,000 additional diagnostic appointments a year, including MRI and CT scanning, ultrasound, X-ray, blood tests, and heart and lung checks.

Braintree is the third CDC delivered by Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, following Thurrock and Southend.

Poole CDC: University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust completed a new CDC endoscopy unit at Poole Hospital in September, with AtkinsRéalis providing programme and project management.

The facility has six endoscopy rooms, a dedicated training centre and a five-washer decontamination facility, alongside infrastructure upgrades including a new transformer and standby generator.

The completed unit is expected to double endoscopy capacity at Poole, with the first patients due to be seen from 5 October.
