Plans have been submitted for a significant redevelopment of the main entrance at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust’s Royal Bolton Hospital, with proposals focused on creating a more accessible, welcoming and patient-centred arrival experience.
The proposed entrance redevelopment is designed to create a more accessible, welcoming and patient-centred arrival experience for patients, visitors and staff.
If approved, the scheme will deliver a redesigned entrance environment featuring an enlarged reception area, improved wayfinding, enhanced accessibility measures, and expanded food and beverage facilities.
The Trust said the development is intended to reduce anxiety for visitors arriving at hospital while improving navigation and comfort across the site.
iFM Bolton is managing the construction and development of the redesigned hospital entrance and is also building the new Integrated Transfer of Care Hub located in N Block at Royal Bolton Hospital.
Construction of the redesigned hospital entrance is expected to begin in summer 2026 and be completed by spring 2027, with temporary access and drop-off arrangements planned throughout the works programme to maintain hospital operations.
If approved, the hospital entrance redevelopment will be fully funded and delivered through an external partnership model, meaning there will be no direct impact on the Trust’s capital budget.
Construction continues on Integrated Transfer of Care Hub
Alongside the entrance project, construction is continuing on the Integrated Transfer of Care Hub, which involves structural upgrades and service relocations to establish a unified hub, with full completion scheduled for September 2026.
Once completed, the hub is intended to improve patient discharge processes and reduce delays in getting people home from the hospital.
The facility will bring together health and care teams in a single coordinated environment to support faster decision-making around discharge planning, community care and onward support services.
The Trust said the integrated model will strengthen collaboration between hospital teams, local authorities and community providers, helping patients return home or move into appropriate care settings sooner and more safely.
The projects form part of wider estate modernisation works taking place across the Royal Bolton Hospital site.
Recent schemes have included a £38m redevelopment of the maternity and women’s health unit delivered through the NHS ProCure23 framework, alongside emergency department upgrades and expanded operating theatre capacity using modern methods of construction.
