Royal Surrey County Hospital has opened its new Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre, a major development designed to increase capacity for cancer surgery and other planned procedures.
The centre was delivered by modular construction specialist MTX Contracts, with DSSR providing mechanical and electrical (M&E) consultancy services from RIBA Stages 2 to 6.
On 22 October, DSSR announced on LinkedIn that it was “delighted to see the new Cancer & Surgical Innovation Centre open its doors following the completion of this major healthcare development”.
The new facility includes six operating theatres and associated surgical facilities, alongside recovery areas, a short-stay ward and a post-anaesthetic care unit.
The centre is expected to enable an additional 7,000 patients to receive surgery each year.
It will support the hospital's robotic and non-robotic surgical services, providing additional capacity for cancer treatment and elective procedures.
MTX uses modern methods of construction
The project was designed around modern methods of construction (MMC), with structural modules manufactured off site before being transported to the hospital for installation.
This approach enabled the structural components to be manufactured away from the hospital site while groundworks progressed on site.
MTX confirmed in 2025 that installation of the structural steel modules had been completed, following the company's appointment to deliver the project earlier that year.
The centre forms part of Royal Surrey County Hospital's investment in its surgical infrastructure.
The trust serves a catchment area of up to three million people across the South East of England and beyond.
Its new surgical facilities are intended to help meet demand for cancer surgery and reduce waiting times for elective procedures.
