Work has officially begun on a new £15m health centre and GP surgery in Weston-super-Mare that is part of a town-centre transformation project.
The Sunnyside Road North facility will replace the existing Graham Road surgery.
The South West team of RED Construction Group, in partnership with StudioHIVE and Atlas Land, are leading the construction of the health hub.
Once completed, the hub will be a five-storey facility that is expected to serve up to 12,500 patients.
It will include NHS clinical accommodation and space for a future pharmacy.
Construction officially got under way this month with a groundbreaking ceremony, marking the transition from planning to delivery.
Completion of the health centre is expected in 2027.
“It has been a complex project and we have been working hard behind the scenes with developers and the NHS to help make it happen,” said Mike Bell, leader of North Somerset Council.
Broader town-centre transformation scheme
The project is the first phase of a wider transformation scheme on land provided by North Somerset Council.
Alongside the new healthcare hub, plans include around 200 one- and two-bedroom apartments on land formerly part of Weston-super-Mare Rugby Club, plus a site earmarked for a new primary school.
The first phase also lays the groundwork for further regeneration around Weston Gateway, with community and sports facilities tied into the broader vision.
NHS and council partners have highlighted the importance of the development in supporting improved access to care as the town’s population grows.
“This is a huge step forward for Weston. For too long local people have been waiting for modern health facilities, and I’m really pleased to see this project finally getting underway,” said Dan Aldridge, the Labour MP for Weston-super-Mare.
